{"id":2933,"date":"2008-09-25T16:23:28","date_gmt":"2008-09-25T14:23:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.fluoritech.it\/?p=2933"},"modified":"2015-07-16T14:59:29","modified_gmt":"2015-07-16T12:59:29","slug":"2nd-euchems-chemistry-congress-2008-september-16-20-torino-italy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.fluoritech.com\/?p=2933","title":{"rendered":"2nd EuCheMS Chemistry Congress &#8211;  2008 September 16-20 &#8211; Torino, Italy"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Simplified kinetic study of the reaction between perfluoro-methyl-hypofluorite and perfluoro-olefins<\/strong><\/h1>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Navarrini Walter <strong><sup>a*<\/sup><\/strong>, Venturini Francesco<sup> <strong>a<\/strong><\/sup>, Sansotera Maurizio<sup> <strong>a<\/strong><\/sup>, Metrangolo Pierangelo<sup> <strong>a<\/strong><\/sup>, Resnati Giuseppe<sup> <strong>a<\/strong><\/sup>, Galimberti Marco<sup> <strong>b<\/strong><\/sup>, Barchiesi Emma<strong><sup> b<\/sup><\/strong>, Dardani Patrizia<strong><sup> b <\/sup>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><sup>a<\/sup><\/strong><em> Dipartimento di Chimica, Materiali e Ingegneria Chimica, Politecnico di Milano, 7, via Mancinelli, I-20131, Milano, Italy.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><sup>b<\/sup><\/strong> Solvay-Solexis, R &amp;D Centre, 20, viale Lombardia, I-20021 Bollate (MI), Italy.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In the reaction between perfluoroolefins and perfluoroalkylhypofluorites [1] the existence of two different free radical reaction mechanisms is demonstrated by the presence of characteristic by-products.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In particular in the reaction between trifluoromethyl hypofluorite and highly reactive perfluoroolefins like CF<sub>2<\/sub>=CFOCF<sub>3<\/sub> and CF<sub>2<\/sub>=CF<sub>2<\/sub>, the free radical oligomerization and dimerization products can be suppressed by utilizing the opportune experimental conditions.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">These experimental conditions are characterized by the presence of hypofluorite during the addition reaction and can be performed by adding the olefin to the hypofluorite, these conditions herein referred as &#8221;Reverse hypofluorite addition&#8221; are different from the standard methodologies described in the literature where generally the hypofluorite is added to the olefin.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The main products of the addition of CF<sub>3<\/sub>OF to CF<sub>2<\/sub>=CFOCF<sub>3<\/sub> are perfluoro-2,2-bis-(methoxy)-ethane and perfluoro-1,3-bis-(methoxy)-ethane [2] in the molar ratio of 20% and 80% respectively.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">We found experimental evidence for the termination products peroxide CF<sub>3<\/sub>OOCF<sub>3<\/sub> and perfluoroethersC<sub>8<\/sub>F<sub>18<\/sub>O<sub>4<\/sub>respectively. The first termination product CF<sub>3<\/sub>OOCF<sub>3 <\/sub>was present at high amount in the reaction where the CF<sub>3<\/sub>OF concentration was maintained always above zero and substantially constant, on the contrary the termination products C<sub>8<\/sub>F<sub>18<\/sub>O<sub>4<\/sub> were completely absent. In this conditions the oligomerization and polymerization of the perfluoroolefins were also suppressed, as well as in the case of the very reactive TFE.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p>[1] W.
